In the field of high-temperature superconductors, atom probe tomography is a relatively new instrument, with the ability to provide a new perspective on the 3D nanoscale microstructure. However, field evaporation of nonmetallic materials is fraught with unique challenges that matter little in the world of metallic evaporation. In this study, we review the laser absorption, correlated evaporation, molecular dissociation, and the crystallographic effects on the field evaporation of 800-m ${\rm RB}{\rm a}_ 2{\rm C}{\rm u}_ 3{\rm O}_{ 7-{\rm \delta }}$ (R = Gd, Sm) coated conductor tapes deposited by Reactive Co-Evaporation Cyclic Deposition and Reaction (RCE-CDR). Ultraviolet 355 nm laser pulsing was found to have a substantial beneficial effect on minimizing the fracture probability compared with 532 nm illumination, especially when evaporating insulating oxide precipitates. This, in turn, allows for the 3D compositional analysis of defects such as flux pinning centers introduced by precipitation and doping. As a result, evidence for the precipitation of nanoscale ${\rm G}{\rm d}_ 2{\rm C}{\rm u}_ 2{\rm O}_ 5$ is discussed. The effect of crystallographic orientation is studied, where [001] aligned evaporation is found to develop compositional aberrations.

Magnetic field-assisted freeze-casting of porous alumina structures is reported. Different freeze-casting parameters were investigated and include the composition of the original slurry (Fe3O4 and PVA content) and the control of temperature during the free casting process. The optimum content of the additives in the slurry were 3 and 6 wt% for PVA and Fe3O4, respectively. These conditions provided the most unidirectional porous structures throughout the length of the sample. The sintering temperature was maintained at 1500 °C for 3 h. The application of a vertical magnetic field (parallel to ice growth direction) with using a cooling rate mode technique was found to enhance the homogeneity of the porous structure across the sample. The current study suggests that magnetic field-assisted freeze-casting is a viable method to create highly anisotropic porous ceramic structures.

Many technological applications of austenitic shape memory alloys (SMAs) involve cyclical mechanical loading and unloading in order to take advantage of pseudoelasticity. In this paper, we investigated the effect of mechanical bending of pseudoelastic NiTi SMA wires using high-energy synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD). Differential scanning calorimetry was performed to identify the phase transformation temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy images show that micro-cracks in compressive regions of the wire propagate with increasing bend angle, while tensile regions tend not to exhibit crack propagation. SR-XRD patterns were analyzed to study the phase transformation and investigate micromechanical properties. By observing the various diffraction peaks such as the austenite (200) and the martensite (${\bar 1}12$), (${\bar 1}03$), (${\bar 1}11$), and (101) planes, intensities and residual strain values exhibit strong anisotropy, depending upon whether the sample is in compression or tension during bending.

Knowledge of the composition of many cultural heritage objects is limited, resulting in many unanswered questions in regards to the provenance, composition, and production methods. In this paper, our objective is to show that dual beam scanning electron microscope (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) can be used rapidly and non-destructively to determine the surface and bulk metal compositions in small cultural heritage objects. We show, for the first time, that this novel FIB technique can be successfully applied non-destructively to cultural heritage objects by examining three representative silver plated objects (Candelabra, “Century” spoon, and New York World’s Fair spoon) from the Dallas Museum of Art’s unparalleled collection of modern American silver. In each case, we successfully reveal and characterize the bulk metal as well as the Ag-plating, up to ∼80 µm deep and show that there is no visual damage resulting from the milling process of the FIB. This novel characterization technique can be applied, due to its ease of availability and rapid use, to many other problems in addition to silver plated objects, making dual beam SEM/FIB a possible cornerstone technique in the study of cultural heritage objects.

Interpenetrating Al2O3/Al composites were created by liquid-metal infiltration of alumina preforms with three-dimensional periodicity produced by a robotic deposition method. Volume-averaged lattice strains in the alumina phase were measured by synchrotron x-ray diffraction at various uniaxial compression stresses up to 350 MPa. Load transfer, which is experimentally found to occur between the aluminum and the alumina phase, is in agreement with simple rule of mixtures models. Spatially resolved measurements showed variations in load transfer at different positions within the composite for the elastic-, plastic-, and damage-deformation regimes. Using phase-enhanced imaging, the extent of damage within the composites was observed.
